Diary of a Social Media Virgin - Part 1: "The beginning of my voyage ...! ...
This is the first episode of my new blog where I will be sharing my adventures in the new, expanding and fascinating world of Social Media.
I am one of a new breed of “bloggers”, namely those of a certain age and with practically zero skills on the computer. So this all represents a challenge to my practical and intellectual abilities but I’m being advised that this is the way forward for those of us who want to attempt to dominate our areas of expertise on the web.
All sounds pretty impressive, eh? And it certainly is to one of my generation to whom these things don’t necessarily come easily. Why you might be thinking? Well actually I’m setting myself the task of building a business and communicating to everyone I can find, the benefits of a healthy lifestyle that has revolutionised not only my own life but of many, many others since the time I was introduced to it, over ten years ago. A business that has been languishing for some time through not being able to get the word out to those who would like to listen.
“Be grateful if your traditional marketing methods are failing now – in the future they will fail for everyone and it gives you an advantage to get ahead” (Frank Kern)
This is the beginning of a year-long journey for me, starting today, working and liaising on a constant basis with a couple of friends/mentors, to develop my Portfolio of Find-ability and Content on the Web. Central to this process are my business coaches Vanessa Warwick and Nick Tadd who are giving me access to their wealth of business expertise and who over the next twelve months will be helping me devise and refine my online strategies and how to structure my online contribution. I have known Vanessa and Nick now for two years and they have helped me a lot on an informal basis with property and general business advice. So I am delighted and have every confidence in taking this on to the next level through their newly-launched business mentorship programme. I have been working in my business for over ten years . There have been ups and downs – currently the downs dominate the ups! It’s all to do with communication or lack of it. And it is more and more apparent to me that the new way of creating visibility for myself and my business (and indeed for everyone in business) is via sharing and contribution on the web. You see, it’s not about “selling”, either yourself or your product. It’s about what you can give and how you can add value to others. Because what goes around comes around. And that is a universal law to which I have always subscribed.
I am what might be described as being in the Golden Age, in fact a “Silver Surfer”. And that’s quite enough of the colour comparisons! I have a tremendous passion for everything to do with health and wealth – both emotional and financial. The technologies I am working with have had a huge positive impact on my own health, which has given me the energy to get out there and spread the word! Instead of sitting by the fire, waiting for a crust of bread to be thrown my way – in a manner of speaking!
My first tasks today have been to understand who my potential clients are and where and how to find them in the online world. I feel a bit like that chap who stood on a peak and stared at the Pacific – and the whole new universe in front of him. It’s scary but intensely invigorating all at the same time.
A review of my website with my mentors today has determined that it is not an authentic reflection of who I am and what I am setting out to do. So I will be working on this. I am also going to make it easier for people to connect with me by adding Twitter and Facebook connect buttons. I am going to be working with Ces at Creatively Minded on developing my personal business branding as I understand it is imperative that this is consistent across all my new Social Media activities to allow people to get to know me and follow me. This feels like a solid foundation on which to build my renewed personal brand. And I’m sure it will help me to stand out from the crowd. I will be writing regular blogs about health & wellbeing, sharing tips, and case studies as well as sharing information on how to cope with issues such as the menopause, problems with sleeping and the huge subject of bone health.
The reason for writing this blog is to share my journey with others as I believe there are many people in the same situation as myself who are struggling to make sense of Social Media engagement and all the challenges it presents.
One of the major challenges is time and how to structure your working day. And I’ve never been good at that!
(On a side note, I had a childhood dream to be a journalist which was denied me. However, the desire it seems, never went away. It’s therefore really exciting to find this new world where I can self-publish online and hopefully reach out to a large audience. It’s an ancient belief, isn’t it: Ask and it shall be given unto you!)
I look forward to being with you in this new world and would very much value your input and comments.
The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.
I hope you will join me on my journey which I will be sharing via blogging, Twitter, Facebook, Ecademy and special interest forums and hopefully you can leverage some of my breakthroughs and experiences to help you in your own business. Wish me luck and I hope to see you and get to know you on my Cyber Journey!
